Monday 23rd January to Friday 27th January.

Ballymena is gearing up for the Chinese New Year on January 23rd and the Go Sun restaurant will have a range of food, traditionally associated with Chinese New Year celebrations.

Monday the 23rd marks the first day of the Year of the Dragon and the Go Sun is planning to serve a range of old favourites as well as a few festive specialities for the occasion.

Food is symbolically important in Chinese culture. For instance, Chicken is served for prosperity, uncut noodles represent a long life and spring rolls symbolise wealth as their shape resembles gold bars. Go Sun will include these along with many other ‘lucky’ foods during their five day long celebrations.

One of the best known traditions of Chinese New Year amongst families is the giving of money in red envelopes. This is considered lucky money and the amount is deemed unimportant. The envelopes are pinned to a ‘Money Tree’ and the Go Sun will have their own ‘Money Tree’, which will contain a selection of prizes as well as money. Each table will get one free pick from the Money Tree but on arrival there will be a red envelope presented to everyone.

The restaurant will be adorned in resplendent shades of red, with the traditional red lanterns on display and Chinese music adding to the ambience.

Go Sun have put together a taste tempting, purse friendly menu for the celebrations which will let everyone join in this lucky festival. On Monday 23rd, Tuesday 24th and Wednesday 25th, there will be a three course taster menu available along with the a la carte, which will allow people to try a selection of smaller versions of new and old dishes. A celebratory free glass of wine or beer will be included in the price.

On Thursday 26th there will be a special New Year buffet night with a selection of over 30 new and old dishes, including starter, main course and desserts.

To conclude the celebrations, Friday 27th will be the Grand Finale Special Banquet night. A Grand Banquet menu has been prepared by head chef Stephen and chef Heung which will only be revealed on the night. Festivities will include the Money Tree, the release of Lanterns(weather permitting), the Dragon Dance and the drawing of the lucky winners for the prizes at the end of the night.

So if you missed the fireworks and celebrations on New Year’s Eve, let Go Sun help you welcome in the Year of the Dragon in style!

Visit the festive restaurant on 43 Bridge Street and enjoy the sumptuous tastes of the Chinese New Year!
